Sony Ericsson Announces Three Xperias: Play, Neo and Pro.

In what was no surprise at all, Sony Ericsson officially announced the storied “PlayStation Phone,” the Xperia Play, at MWC on Sunday. We also could have guessed that we’d get official word about the Xperia Neo, based on the leaked photos of it last week. But SE also announced a third phone, the Xperia Pro, that we hadn’t heard about before.

The Xperia Play will be the first PlayStation Certified device–that means it will have access to PlayStation games provided through Sony’s PlayStation Suite, which should launch later in the year. Also, a pre-loaded app will enable discovery of Android Market titles “optimized for game play on the Xperia Play.”

As much as we already know about the Xperia Play, it’s nice to have the final specs confirmed:

  • A slide out game pad with digital D-pad, two analogue touch pads, two shoulder buttons and the four PlayStation icons: circle, cross, square and triangle.
  • Snapdragon processor with a 1Ghz CPU and embedded Adreno GPU graphics processor
  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
  • 4 inch, 480 x 854  (FWVGA) display
  • 5.1 megapixel camera
  • Available next month “globally in selected markets.”

The Xperia Neo is positioned as a multimedia phone, with HDMI out and a backlit Exmor R image sensor for “great stills and videos even in low light.” The Xperia Pro, with its slide out keyboard and pre-loaded Office Suite Pro, is aimed at business users. Otherwise, the two phones share a lot of the same guts:

  • Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro

    3.7 inch 854  x 480 (FWVGA) Bravia Reality Display

  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
  • 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 processor
  • Included 8GB microSD card

The Xperia Neo will be available by the end of March, and the Xperia Pro by the end of  June.
